Interview with Green Day's tour chef

Alif Joe Armstrong

Zesterdaily.com interviewed Green Day's tour chef, Yeah they are Sean Stone and Steve Jenkins . His article is very interesting to read it, it's call "Eat Like a Rock Star"

"For big-name musical groups, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll don't cut it anymore. Healthy, freshly prepared meals are the order of the day. On show night, a 14-hour day is typical for the catering crew. When they're moving from town to town, after the concert, instead of heading to a motel, the crew loads into the bus. Before Irvine, the last concert was in Arizona. "We drove all night and slept on the bus," Stone said. "When we arrived at 10 a.m. in Irvine, we went shopping at Whole Foods and H Mart, a Korean-Chinese supermarket. Then we started cooking.""

Interviews Billie Joe In The New York Times about performing in the musical

Billie Joe Armstrong
The New York Times recently (as in last week) sat down with Billie Joe just before his performance on 'American Idiot' to talk about him performing in the musical .It's a really great Q&A with him

These are excerpts from that conversation.

How did your band mates in Green Day feel about losing you to the show for a few weeks?
"They were like: “Do it. We need to take a break. Get away from us for a while.” They’re totally into it."

What do you do during your downtime from the show?
"I have an apartment and I do demos during the day, just writing songs and stuff, and I have this night thing. I like the fact that I can be on stage at night and be physical and in front of people, while I go home and write at the same time. It’s not like doing it in a tour bus."

Are those songs that could turn up on another Green Day album?
"Right now, I’m at a stage where it’s just for fun. I’m not sure yet. When I get home in March, I’ll just hang out with my band mates, and we’ll pick through the piles. But I’m always writing for the next Green Day record, for sure."
Is this kind of performance something you think you might stick with? Would your rock ‘n’ roll skills apply to it?
In your head, you’re always thinking, how can I improve? What can I do differently? That’s their craft. I was making this analogy, that if you master one form of kung-fu and you want to learn a different technique, that’s almost what it feels like. But I don’t know, I’m not a kung-fu master. [laughs]

Green Day Front Man: "American Idiot" Was Inspired By 9/11

Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong said the mega-hit "American Idiot" -- which led to the creation of a Broadway musical of the same name -- was inspired by the terror attacks of Sept. 11.
"I remember seeing those planes smashing into the World Trade Center live. Right there," Armstrong said during his appearance on the Broadway stage Friday night with "American Idiot" director Michael Mayer for a talkback session dubbed "Idiot University."

"I don't think we ever really, as a society, we had never seen anything that implicit. It was just chaos. I was so confused. I felt paralyzed. So the song 'American Idiot' was the first thing that came to mind."

Armstrong, whose "American Idiot" album focused on American society in the early part of the decade, said watching the band's music performed on stage is a different experience from listening to the record in a traditional setting.

“With me, Mike (Dirnt) and Tre (Cool), we are the three pieces, and it’s like we’re fighting,” Armstrong said. “And that’s been the main argument with the band is us fighting to hear ourselves. [In] the show (on Broadway) the music is pulled back and the vocals up front, it adds a whole new dimension to it – a whole new dynamic.”
He said many of his songs sound better when coming from different voices -- especially female vocalists.
He added, "A lot of them sound better than I do. ... They’re just beautiful singers all around.  They could sing the freakin’ dictionary. It’s amazing.”
