List of 50 American Rock Bands of All Time from in Gibson.com

Alif Joe Armstrong

Tags →

Gibson.com is counting down the top 50 American bands on their website. They posted bands 41-50 today and Green Day has come in at number 50.

Other bands of note in the 41-50 range include The Strokes, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, and Kings of Leon.

Green Day are an American band who make ambitious music out of, well, questioning America. The music of their 2004 album, American Idiot, expresses the fear in the U.S. the days after 9/11, as well as the band’s disillusion with the government of the era. All politically charged lyrics aside, Green Day are a rare bunch who have sold millions of albums (at 15 million, 1994’s “Dookie” is the world’s best-selling punk rock album ever), launched a Broadway musical and earned generations of punkster fans. – Anne Erickson

Gibson will continue updating a full 50 list american band until next 4 July.

Dookie comes in at number 193 in Rolling Stone's top 500 albums of all time

Recently, Rolling Stone made a list of their "Top 500 Albums of All Time". Green Day's album Dookie came in at number 193 on the list.

Rolling Stone said:
"The California trio Green Day sold plenty of tickets and indie records on their own, but nothing they did before or since had the impact of their major-label debut. The skittish Dookie was recorded in little more than three weeks, and singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong blazed through all the vocals in two days. "Right from getting the drum sound, everything seemed to click," their A&R man Rob Cavallo marveled."

Amazon.com has listed Green Day's upcoming live album and DVD as "Awesome as Fuck" and it's release date set for March 15, 2011.

The live album was first announced by Billie Joe on Twitter earlier this year :
“We’ve been recording our live shows since the beginning of tour. Possible Live album coming. A ton of songs! We’re in texas!”
And then has been confirmed by the GDA that the DVD will also be released together with the Live album.

The Live  album will include shows from all over the world during the 21st Century Breakdown tour, but the DVD will be a recording of from two shows Green Day played in Tokyo.

American Idiot cast album nominated for "Best Musical Show Album" in Grammy Award

The American Idiot cast album has been nominated for "Best Musical Show Album". Other nominees include "Sondheim on Sondheim", "Fela!", and "Promises, Promises".

The Recording Academy's Best Musical Show Album is awarded to the Album Producer(s), and to the Lyricist(s) & Composer(s) of 51% or more of a new score. Last night the nominees were announced and we're happy to share that Green Day as the composers and Billie Joe Armstrong as lyricist have been nominated for the Original Broadway Cast Recording: American Idiot (Featuring Green Day)! This is the 19th nomination Green Day has received from the Recording Academy since 1995!

If Green Day wins the award, technicly speaking this would not be the first Grammy that the band has received for the songs in the musical. 'American Idiot' won a Grammy in 2005 for "Best Rock Album" and '21st Century Breakdown' won a Grammy in 2010 for "Best Rock Album".

Tune in to the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards on CBS on Sunday, February 13th at 8PM ET/PT to see if Green Day will take home their 5th Grammy award

Green Day mentioned as a band with a "shelved album"

Alif Joe Armstrong

New York Magazine put Green Day into the category of bands who have  “Shelved Album” or which could have an album called "ruled out" / "retired", it is because the album was stolen, they finally started making a new album called "American Idiot ".

“Following 2000’s tepidly received Warning, Green Day decided to return to its scaled-down roots, recording nearly twenty new songs (which, given Green Day’s early pop-punk metabolism rate, would have yielded an album about eleven minutes long). But the master tapes were stolen from the recording studio, prompting the band to start over again, a task that resulted in 2004’s American Idiot.

For years, fans speculated that Green Day had been releasing Valentines tracks under the guise of the Network, the band’s New Wave side project. But the band members have always denied the charge, and the songs remained forever lost — until this summer, when Green Day recorded Valentines and Cigarettes’s [sic] title track for a forthcoming live album. “
The full story and a few other bands who have "shelved album" like Pink Floyd, Korn and Duran Duran are discussed here. .

It also includes two previously unreleased tracks, "Maria" and Poprocks & Coke". It also contains "J.A.R.", a single released on the Angus soundtrack in 1995, not appearing on any of Green Day's albums.

The album reached #40 in the US and #15 in the UK upon its release, International Superhits! has sold 1,896,000 in the US as of September 2010 where it went platinum and over 3,000,000 worldwide.

Today is Nimrod's 13th birthday

Thirteen years ago today, Green Day's fifth studio album 'Nimrod' was released on October 14, 1997, The album entered the Billboard U.S. charts at #10, and achieved double platinum status, although it did not revive Green Day's sales to the level of Dookie

It is the band's fourth best-selling album (behind Dookie, American idiot, and Insomniac. with a sale success of 2,083,000 copies sold in the US alone and over 6 million worldwide.

Nimrod was reissued on vinyl on June 16, 2009. The album was released in Europe as an HDCD. The songs "Nice Guys Finish Last", "Hitchin A Ride", and "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" are featured in the video game Green Day : Rock Band. The portraits covered on the album cover are Dwight D. Eisenhower Harry S. Truman.

The album includes fast-paced punk rock songs ("Reject", "Platypus (I Hate You)", "Nice Guys Finish Last"), slower-paced Pop Punk songs ("Redundant", "Walking Alone", "Worry Rock"), Ska Punk ("King for a Day"), Suft Rock ("Last Ride In", which is an instrumental track), Southren Rock ("Walking Alone"), Hardcore Punk ("Take Back"), and an acoustic ballad ("Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)".

Reject" came from an incident where a boy received Green Day's previous album, Insomniac, for his eighth birthday from his grandma. The boy started singing Green Day's songs (with explicit lyrics), and his mother got angry and wrote a complaint letter to Armstrong; Armstrong wrote an actual letter back to her, and this song was based on his response.

There are many stories behind this great album, so it gave time for you guys today to listen to the album Nimrod from first to the finish, and do not forget to congratulate the birthday of Nimrod with comments on the article

New Green Day live album coming soon?

Alif Joe Armstrong

Tags → ,

The band just posted on their twitter account that there is a possibility for a new live album soon.
'We've been recording our live shows since the beginning of tour. Possible Live album coming. A ton of songs! We're in texas!'
There hasn't been a live album released from the 21st Century Breakdown tour yet so this would be great if we got one. There was an EP released earlier this year titled "Last Night on Earth (Live in Tokyo)" that featured a couple songs recorded in Japan last year. Before that EP release, the last live album released was Bullet in a Bible.

We will keep you up to date if any more news comes out out this.

411 Mania's Number One Band

Alif Joe Armstrong

Tags → ,

A couple writers from the website 411 Mania have included Green Day in their series "The Weekly Top 5." Green Day comes in at number one on Alistair McGeorge's list.
'Green Day were the first name that sprung to mind when I read this week's topic. Over the last 22 years, Green Day have grown and matured, going from the punk kids on Kerplunk! and 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours to the epic stadium rockers we've heard on recent albums American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown.

Honestly, I love every album Green Day has made (although American Idiot is a low point for the diehard fan in me), from the experimental, acoustic-rock style on Warning to the pop-punk perfection that is Dookie. Never content with sticking to one genre.'
Another writer, Aaron Titan, also included Green Day on his list at number two.

I know they've got a bit of bad press from die-hard fans who think they've lost their edge, but they're selling 21st Century Breakdown short. It's not Dookie-era Green Day, but it's so much more. There's a bit of everything, from pop-punk tracks like "Know Your Enemy", "The Static Age" and "Murder City" to ballads like "21 Guns" and "Last Night On Earth".

The songwriting is fantastic, and they really are the biggest rock band in the world right now.

Meet Scott Hampton from Comic-Con Artist Alley

What inspires your art?

Sometimes music. When I discovered Green Day's American Idiot album, I just listened to it non-stop. I also listen to a lot of books on tape while I'm painting.
